Warwick Strong — by Community2gether

Community2gether (formerly Community 2000) continues our goal of supporting each other, the businesses in our Villages of Florida, Greenwood Lake, and Warwick, and the entire town.

We hope these articles provoke discussions at home and with friends and neighbors.  It will help us all start a safe and thoughtful transition -- back to a more open and active town as we begin to successfully move beyond this pandemic.

It’s wonderful news that we have.  By our efforts and cooperation, we’ve significantly reduced the level of new cases in our region.

Still, not everyone feels safe.  When we see someone who is fearful of interaction with others, we have to consider they may be medically vulnerable.  They may be the caregiver of a child or senior citizen with a serious medical condition that makes them highly susceptible to this particular virus.

Our respect and concern can be shown by continuing to wear face masks in proximity with our friends and neighbors -- both indoors and outdoors until we have further reduced the level of contagion.

As we start to move around our Town, we hear that people are trying to find more ways to purchase what they need right here in Warwick.  Historically, Warwick was a community that came out of the Great Depression a little stronger than it went into that difficult era because the community pulled together and supported each other.  So perhaps there is now the emergence of a new sense of Localism in Warwick.  Maybe our pride and sense of purpose in our town and our desire to keep Warwick Strong will make us look locally instead of nationally for what we need.

We think this could be a time for Warwick to find new healthy ways to grow and produce more products with resources to be found in Warwick.  We hope these possibilities will start to appear.

But for right now, it is time to help our trusted local shopkeepers and businesses to provide those products which you seek.  Go visit them, if only to say hello.  “I miss my customers very much” says Bill Fitzula of Fitzula’s Gift Shop in Greenwood Lake and again by Bob Maxwell of Style Counsel in the Village of Warwick.  Express yourself, don’t be shy.

And ask for what you would like to find locally.  Reach out to us at info@community2gether.org or follow us on Facebook: @Community2gether.  We would also like to hear from you and learn how we can be more effective to support our community’s needs.

Let’s get out safely and support those we value.  It is time.  Let’s go.

The Foundation of Reactivation - by Community2gether

Community2gether (formerly Community 2000) is creating a series of articles about our Town of Warwick including the three villages and every hamlet.

Our goal is to activate us all to support each other, our Town and the businesses in our Town.

We hope these articles are thought-provoking and launch discussions to help bring us out of this pandemic.

Do you remember the first time you came to Warwick?  Or if you were born and raised in Warwick, do you remember being away for a while and then how you felt when you came back to Warwick.  Those early thoughts and experiences need to be cherished and considered now more than ever.  Because those thoughts of the extraordinary value of Warwick need to be foremost in our thinking.  They can be our foundation of reactivation.

Warwick is unique because of each of us who live and work here.  It is our presence in town, our participation and our support of each other, our institutions, our main streets, parks, farms and of course every business.

Excellent leadership is what’s guided the public and private sectors of Warwick for over 100 years, preserving our history and land.

It has been over 12 weeks or almost one quarter of this year since we have been locked down.  We think we’re ready to safely move on.

So, what do we do now?  How do we take our lives back from our fear?

We all have learned how to be safe.  We have learned and are perfecting social distancing, taking care of ourselves by washing our hands and wearing masks to protect not only ourselves but also those around us and those back home who we love.  Those steps we have all taken are proving to be lifesaving and will need to go on based on medical facts.

Each of us can make a list of those events or Spring moments that we have missed in the last three months.  Use this list to experience those events in a different way -- if somewhat delayed.  That birthday or anniversary gift or graduation present that we were not able to deliver in a timely manner can now be a special surprise.  Let’s find a way to secure those items in Florida, Greenwood Lake or Warwick and around the town.  Wrap them in a special way and deliver them with pizzazz.  Those moments delayed can be rich and long remembered because of the extra effort taken in these extraordinary times

The pandemic has taken our Spring.

It will change our Summer.

It will change our Fall.

But it will not change who we are as citizens of Warwick.  Unchanged in this season and always is the overwhelming gratitude and support Warwick has for its first responders, health care workers and volunteers.

It will not change our generosity or our caring for neighbors or our love of this place we call home.  In our opinion there is no better place to have been during a lockdown than the Town of Warwick.

Let’s plan to get out safely and support those we value.

A Statement Against Racism

Americans and people all over the world continue to gather and protest since the tragic murder of George Floyd last week.  We mourn his death, along with Breonna Taylor’s, Ahmaud Arbery’s, Tony McDade’s, and many other victims.  We share the outrage of the protesters that are peacefully demonstrating and we stand with them demanding justice and to protest anti-Black racism and police brutality.

We understand the anger and frustration that has resulted from the generations of abuse and murder of Black people and other people of color at the hands of those who are supposed to protect.  The anger, frustration, and pain are deep and justifiable.

Black communities have not received equal justice under the law for centuries.  The promise of the American Dream, has never truly been accessible to Black people and people of color.  We must address and eliminate the systemic racism that is endemic, not only in our justice system but in our educational, housing, health, and economic systems as well, if we are to truly heal and effect systemic transformation.

Community2gether’s mission is “to connect and engage people to gather and implement ideas to improve our Town.”  To this end, we understand that we must listen, educate ourselves, and help to educate other members of our community to become better allies so that together, we can bring about real, lasting change because Black Lives Matter.

Commitment to Change - by Community2gether

Community2gether (formerly Community 2000) continues our goal of supporting each other, the businesses in our Villages of Florida, Greenwood Lake, Warwick and the entire town.

We hope these articles provoke and launch discussions to help bring us smoothly, safely and successfully out of this pandemic.

Entering this lock down of our businesses, schools, churches and institutions we knew would be tough.

We knew that we had never been in a health crisis like this and we each had a reaction in those first few days and weeks.

We must admit that it actually was more difficult than anticipated.  We’ve learned of our resourcefulness individually and as a community.  We’ve learned that our systems both personal and community-wide were challenged, tested and stressed.  Those systems not only held up but were adaptive.

For that we should be proud and comforted to be in a town that will sustain us, provide for us and protect us.

As we ponder that and try to write of our successes the world around us is in turmoil.  Not everyone is experiencing support, protection and safety.  Many in America are angry and demand change.

Some would say that this started with a homicide in Minneapolis.  But this disrespect and the limiting of opportunities and support for the Black Community has been going on for hundreds of years and the time for change has come.

We’ve learned of the depth of our caring for family and friends and an extension of the caring to help those in need.  Now it is time to open our hearts, open our eyes and listen to the needs of those forgotten.  We will be a stronger community when all members of our town are strong.

The tapestry of our town has many colors.  Our true strength is in the strength of every citizen.  We must take up this challenge and come together to find ways to change.

We must expand our commitment to change.

We must link hands and hearts to not let this moment pass without finding a better way forward -- together.

We know there are no easy solutions to problems we have faced for centuries.  We also know that we need to devote our time, energy and resources to making a difference.  We at Community2gether are committed to starting a process locally.  To do our part together to bring us together to find solutions.

Let’s plan to get out safely and support those we value.  It is time.

Checks Distributed to Local Food Pantries

Phase I Completed -- Checks Distributed!

After a little more than one week, the generous citizens of Warwick fully met our $5,000 matching fund, and in fact went over the total. We’ll start planning a second phase of fundraising before long. We thank everyone who helped make this fundraising drive a success, and extend more heartfelt thanks to the people behind our local food pantries.

In response to the great need for supporting food pantries during the pandemic, Community2gether and Sustainable Warwick launched the Resilient Warwick Food Pantry Support Fund. We sought donations to the fund and set aside $5,000 to match those contributions.

Click the image below to watch the Food Pantries accept their checks and to learn how they are meeting the new challenges that COVID-19 has brought to their organizations and the families they serve.

On May 14th we distributed checks to the five local food pantries, as shown in the pie chart below. All of these food pantries participate in the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, which provided data on the number of meals these food pantries typically serve on a monthly basis. Those numbers helped us decide the fairest way to distribute our support to the food pantries.

Phase I of the Resilient Warwick Food Pantry Support Fund is completed, and for the time being we are not matching new donations. If you wish to donate through us to the local food pantries at this time, we will disburse your contribution along with a later fundraising campaign.

Funds were dispersed to five Warwick-area food pantries (based on the number of people they usually serve), as shown in the diagram above.

At this time it is especially important for the food pantries to receive monetary contributions. Social distancing requirements mean food pantries have to be especially careful with donations in kind. Moreover, with monetary contributions they can acquire large amounts of food fairly inexpensively through the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley and other connections.

Community2gether Asks for Community Support of Warwick Food Pantries

Warwick, NY - The Coronavirus pandemic has changed everyone’s life, and no one knows when things will return to normal.  The uncertainty leaves many people feeling depressed, frightened, and helpless.  Businesses have had to close, lay off workers, or cut their hours, reducing workers’ ability to care for themselves and their families.

Some of our neighbors who struggle to make ends meet may now have to choose between buying food or medicine.  Or having to decide who gets those necessities when there are only enough supplies to take care of some, but not all, family members.  These families have relied on local food pantries long before this pandemic, which will only increase the numbers of people who need help.

Our local food pantries are under pressure to meet the demands created by the coronavirus.  The Florida, Greenwood Lake, Pine Island, and Warwick food pantries depend upon volunteers – usually seniors - who are one of the groups at a higher risk of catching the virus.  Pantry organizers are working to revise operating procedures to protect both vulnerable volunteers and their clients in order to minimize the spread of the virus.

Food distribution channels have been interrupted by the pandemic, too, forcing pantry organizers to travel farther and pay more for food and other essentials that they need to buy and distribute to their clients.  No one can predict the scope and length of this pandemic, and given the uncertainty, we anticipate an increase in the number of individuals and families that, for the first time, will need to rely on a food pantry.

If you can, we ask that you please help the food pantries help our community by making a monetary donation today.  Especially at this time, because of the need to limit physical contact, monetary donations are more valuable to the pantries than food donations.  If you can, pledge to make a recurring donation every month, at least for the next three months.  Visit the websites below to make your donation.  We’re all in this together.
